of cultural center 'de Balie', this bar caters to a theater and movie going
public. Housed in the former Leidseplein
prison, this is a large and airy place, with an upstairs

De Brakke Grond Nes 43 (626 00 44). This
bar-restaurant on a quiet little square is part of the Flemish Cultural
Centre which, in the same building, also houses a theater and a gallery.
During summer, the square transforms into an enjoyable and sunny terrace.
Flanders being a part of Belgium, the Brakke Grond is famous for its large

very popular 'brown' bar in the Pijp, which over the years has become something
of a neigborhood institution. The Cafe is a joyous bar which serves plat
du jours and main dishes at very reasonable prices. No reservations, so

serves as a foyer for the Stadsschouwburg (the City Theatre) so actors and
visitors are well represented. Visitors from the neighboring Leidseplein
cinemas find their way here as well. Cafecox has a downstairs bar with a
luxurious interior, with burgundy red carpet and large mirrors. The upstairs
restaurant serves affordable French cuisine. Efficient service and a late
close accommodate theater visitors. Open 10am-1am (3am weekend). Kitchen 12.30-15.30pm & 5.30-11pm. De Doffer Runstraat 12-14 (622 66 86). De
Doffer in fact is both a bar-restaurant and a separate 'brown' bar, each
with their own opening hours. During summer it's possible to dine outside
on the sidewalk. Situated in a beautiful part of town, which is perfect
for an after-dinner stroll, the Doffer serves good food at low prices.Open bar 11am-3pm (4am weekend), bar-restaurant 12-3pm & 6-10pm. De Engelbewaarder Kloveniersburgwal
59 (625 37 72). Started out as a 'literary cafe' in the seventies but the focus has shifted to music and food. Decent kitchen, moderately priced. Popular live jazz jam-session every Sunday from 4-7pm. Open 12pm-1am. Kitchen 6pm-10pm. Festina Lente Looiersgracht
40b (638 14 12). Cosy and intimate, a real neighborhood hangout. On the menu various 'lentini'; small dishes, largely Mediterranean in origin. Excellent place to while away some time. Open daily 11am-11pm. Kapitein Zeppos Gebed Zonder End 5 (624 20 57). Spacious
and airy bar-restaurant Kapitein Zeppos was named after a famous Belgian
television star of the '60s. Divided into a bar area with a stage, and a
restaurant area with a glass roof that can be opened on warm sunny days.
Zeppos also has a cobblestone courtyard which makes a very pleasant terrace.
Live music every Sunday, the highlight being the monthly cabaret. Open 11am-1pm (2am weekends). Kitchen 11am-4pm & 6pm-11pm. |
