Rakang Thai
Elandsgracht 29 (620 95 51).map
rakang.jpg (5655 bytes)Trendy Thai restaurant in the Jordaan, popular with locals. The interior is a wonderful combination of Thai tradition and (post)modern influences, with cane chairs wrapped in white cloth, paneled walls with modern lighting and beautiful designer chinaware, each course served on a different plate. Delicious authentic Thai cooking.
 Open daily 6pm-10.30pm.

Sama Sebo
PC Hooftstraat 27 (662 81 46). map
Considered by many as the best Indonesian restaurant in town. The specialty here is of course the 'Rijsttafel' , a 20-dish festive menu. Indonesian interior with rush mats and batiks. Located on the most upmarket shopping street of Amsterdam, so the sidewalk tables make for good people watching during summer.
Open noon-2pm and 6pm-10pm. Closed Sun.

Take Thai
Utrechtsestraat 87 (622 05 77). map
Original Thai cuisine in basic white interior. Symmetrical minimalistic furnishings, like the vertically placed fluorescent tubes, are beautiful but do nothing for the acoustical qualities. The delicious food however more than makes up for this. A la carte or menus for two. Popular, so make reservations.
 Open daily 6pm-11pm.

Tempo Doeloe
Utrechtsestraat 75 (625 67 18). map
Upmarket Indonesian restaurant with authentic food. Informal atmosphere with linen tablecloths and flowers in abundance. Of course they serve a traditional rijsttafel (multi-dish festive menu) but don't miss the simply delicious sateh kambing! Remember, when it says it's hot, it's hot.
 Open daily 6pm-11.30pm.

Wagamama

map
Imported from the UK, this is franchised fast food territory, but with an upmarket twist. All dishes are freshly cooked, and there's a huge variety to choose from. The downside is there are no entrees, just main and side dishes; they bring you whatever is ready, so it's a bit difficult to get any kind of order into your meal. No reservations.
Open daily 12am-11pm.
