Harkema
Nes 67 (428 22 22). map
Large brasserie in a former tobacco warehouse, on a small alley right in the middle of the old city center. The industrial character of the warehouse, with the large skylights, has been complemented by an elegant no frills interior in browns and whites. Adequate French cuisine at affordable prices; worth a try! Popular so make reservations.
Open 11am-11pm (1am weekends).

With a menu carrying burrito's as well as tandoori chicken Smulewicz serves world cuisine at moderate prices. Very convenient if you plan to go to one of the surrounding theaters later on. Reservations recommended.

Van Puffelen
Prinsengracht 375-377 (624 62 70). map
On first sight this seems to be another small 'brown' bar, but once you walk into the back you step into the largest bar-restaurant in town. Although enormous, van Puffelen has managed to retain an intimate atmosphere. During the summer it's possible to sit outside on a barge moored in the canal. Check the eye-catching ceiling, painted 'Michelangelo-style' with nude women floating about.
Open Mon-Thu 3pm-1am, Fri 3pm-3am, Sat noon-3am, Sun noon-1am.
Kitchen 6pm-11pm.
