1e Klas Central Station, platform 2b (625 01 31). Large
'grand cafe' style restaurant in Central Station's former first class buffet,
which has been restored to its original late 19th century splendor. Beautiful
interior with large windows and a monumental bar with mirrors and tall porcelain
vases. 1e Klas offers French cuisine at moderate prices. Open 9.30am-11pm. Kitchen 6pm-10pm. Altmann Amsteldijk 25 (662 77 77). Up
market spacious restaurant on the border of Amstel river, a bit out of city
center. Elegant styling with dark brown sofas, light walls and lots of candles.
The cooking by a former chef of the Dylan
is definitely worth a visit. See and be seen is the motto here; make reservations
for the VIP-deck (4 tables on a raised platform) if you're in the mood.
Open daily 6pm-11pm. Bar open until 1am (3am weekends). |

Barok
Wolvenstraat 22/24 (330 74 70). Large,
spacious, and pretty baroque indeed with Louis Seize furniture in varied
colors. Caters to a younger audience, and sports a loungy bar area and matching
tunes. On offer French cuisine with a modern twist, certainly worth a try,
and after dinner you could stroll across to Wolvenstraat
23 for a digestif. Open daily 12am-11pm (Sun/Wed 6pm-10pm). De Belhamel Brouwersgracht
60 (622 10 95). Elegant restaurant with a beautiful Art Nouveau interior. Most tables have a good view of the junction of the Herengracht and Brouwersgracht canals, one of the main attractions of this eatery. Open daily 6pm-midnight. Entresol Geldersekade 29 (623 79 12). As
you might expect the interior is dominated by the entresol, and done up
with pretty basic wooden floors, chairs and tables; the china and cutlery
however deserve a special mention. Excellent cooking, with the menu listing
mostly Mediterranean dishes - sometimes with a modern twist - at affordable
prices. Open Wed-Sun 6pm-10pm. Fifteen Jollemanhof 9 (0900 343 83 36). Modeled
after it's London counterpart, where famed TV-cook Jamie Oliver took in
15 deprived youths to train as cooks. Fifteen is located in a former warehouse
in Amsterdam's Eastern Harbor development, with appropriate streetwise interior
with colorful corrugated iron walls and graffiti. Two separate areas, the
Restaurant with a fixed 4-course menu, and the Trattoria with two pastas
at moderate prices. Open daily 6pm-midnight. |
