Jean-Jean 1e Anjeliersdwarsstraat 14 (627 71 53). Jean-Jean
has reopened on it's old location. The old dark interior has been redone
with bare wood and light colors, but remains nonetheless intimate. Tables
are quit closely spaced, so be prepared to share conversations. On offer
French cuisine with a modern approach, at reasonable prices. Open daily 6pm-11pm, closed Mon. Lof Haarlemmerstraat 62 (620 29 97). Signs
of its butcher provenance are the large display case filled with fresh Mediterranean
vegetables, and the walls of exposed brickwork and tiles. Plain wooden tables
and sturdy linen make for an elegant but unpretentious interior. The neon
'tocque' [chef's hat] next to the open kitchen seems to will all attention
to chef Sander's work, which indeed is of high quality; an international/fusion
cuisine with a very palatable mix of Mediterranean and Asian ingredients.
Lof's setting is informal, the audience definitely hip; for a bit of intimacy
make your reservations for the back room a few steps up. Open 6pm-11pm, closed Mon. Mamouche Quellijnstraat 104 (673 63 61). Top
notch North-African cuisine with a French twist, in a sober, minimalist
interior, done up with candles and stylish porcelain. On the menu delicate
Moroccan and Tunisian dishes, prepared with great care and very tasteful
indeed. Popular and not much room so it can feel a bit cramped and noisy.
