Garlic Queen
Reguliersdwarsstraat 27 (422 64 26). map
As the name suggests garlic galore, with portraits of Queen Beatrix adorning the walls. In this restaurant in the middle of Amsterdam's most notorious gay area, every single dish from entree to dessert (garlic ice..) is prepared with garlic. The piece de resistance is a beef stew prepared with no less than 60 cloves! However, this is no freak cuisine; all flavours are wonderfully balanced, and often the garlic - be it deep fried, smoked or otherwise - is presented as a side dish to be added to taste. All starters and a lot of the main dishes can be ordered without garlic as well.
Open 6pm-midnight (weekend 1am!), closed Mon-Tue.

  Herengracht
Herengracht 435 (616 24 82). map
Fashionable split-level restaurant cum bar near Leidseplein. Loungy interior with unadorned brick walls and sofa's and chairs in orange and browns. French cuisine, with traditional dishes like steak tartare with fries, tournedos béarnaise, farmers chicken and angler, all prepared with taste. Popular so crowded, and due to the low ceilings it can get a little stuffy inside. Make reservations.
Open daily 10am-11pm.

Jean-Jean
1e Anjeliersdwarsstraat 14 (627 71 53).
map
Jean-Jean has reopened on it's old location. The old dark interior has been redone with bare wood and light colors, but remains nonetheless intimate. Tables are quit closely spaced, so be prepared to share conversations. On offer French cuisine with a modern approach, at reasonable prices.
Open daily 6pm-11pm, closed Mon.

Lof

Haarlemmerstraat 62 (620 29 97). map
Signs of its butcher provenance are the large display case filled with fresh Mediterranean vegetables, and the walls of exposed brickwork and tiles. Plain wooden tables and sturdy linen make for an elegant but unpretentious interior. The neon 'tocque' [chef's hat] next to the open kitchen seems to will all attention to chef Sander's work, which indeed is of high quality; an international/fusion cuisine with a very palatable mix of Mediterranean and Asian ingredients. Lof's setting is informal, the audience definitely hip; for a bit of intimacy make your reservations for the back room a few steps up.

Open 6pm-11pm, closed Mon.

Mamouche
Quellijnstraat 104 (673 63 61).
map
Top notch North-African cuisine with a French twist, in a sober, minimalist interior, done up with candles and stylish porcelain. On the menu delicate Moroccan and Tunisian dishes, prepared with great care and very tasteful indeed. Popular and not much room so it can feel a bit cramped and noisy. Reservations are in order.

Open 6pm-11pm, closed Mon.
