Amstel 54
amsteltaveernegevel.jpg (7408 bytes)Amstel 54 (623 42 54). map
Continuation of The Amstel Taveerne, the first gay bar in the Amstel area. Judging by the large - mixed - crowds it attracts, it's still very popular. Especially pleasant during summer when everyone spills out onto the sidewalk lining the Amstel river. Be prepared for some camp Dutch sing-a-long.
Open daily 4pm-1am (weekend 3am).

April
Reguliersdwarsstraat 37 (625 95 72). map
Large, relaxed gay bar with a modern interior. Seems to have lost part of its clientele to the Soho right across the street, but since most of the gay bars on this street all belong to the same owners anyway, who cares? An interesting feature is the back bar, which revolves when it gets crowded; just stay put and everybody will float by. On warm summer days the party continues on the sidewalk.
Open daily 2pm-1am (2am weekends).

Reguliersdwarstraat 44 (689 70 70).
map
The most recent addition to the popular Reguliersdwarsstraat area is a large three-in-one; grand-cafe during the day, where you can have a late breakfast, lunch, sip a coffee and read the papers, a restaurant during the evening, and a trendy bar at night, when the reading table collapses into the floor to form a dance floor. More women then you would expect, maybe due to the well lit interior, as opposed to the dusky atmosphere of some of the surrounding gay bars. See also: lounge.
Open daily 10am-1am (3am weekends).

Bar owned by Gary, one half of the famous 'Christmas Twins'. Though his brother Greg died a few years ago, Gary still runs the place in the same spirit. Backstage is a mix between a coffee corner, a knitwear boutique and a museum, all in a bedazzling array of colors.
Open 10am-6pm; closed Sun.
