| Abraxas Jonge Roelensteeg 12 (625 57 63). A
multifunctional, colorful coffeeshop tucked away in a small alley in city
center. There's a bar decorated with beautiful ceramic mosaics, a separate
Internet area (free access for customers) and an upstairs game room, where
you can play chess or backgammon. Besides the usual fare Abraxas has brownies,
muffins, cakes and shakes all mixed with that special ingredient. Open daily 10am-1am. Amnesia
Herengracht 133 (no phone). A little gem on a beautiful canalside location, this stylish and charming coffeeshop. Interesting menu with some lesser known varieties, some of them 100% organic, and friendly staff who will take time to explain. Small outside terrace makes for nice people watching on a summer's day. Open daily 9.30am-1am. |

Barney's Haarlemmerstraat 102 (625 97 61).
Popular coffeeshop and breakfast bar close to Central Station. If you arrive early by train this might be a good first stop. The extensive breakfast menu, and the fact that its served all day long, is the main attraction of Barney's. All food is prepared with organic ingredients, and what's more, even the weed is organically grown. A few doors down is Barney's brasserie with meals and alcohol to go with your smoke.Open daily 7am-8pm. The Bulldog Palace Leidseplein 13-17 (627 19 08). Amsterdam's
oldest coffeeshop has gradually turned into a genuine chain of soft-drug
selling tourist hangouts, including a full range of Bulldog souvenirs. This
one on the Leidseplein is definitely the biggest and the loudest of them
all. Ironically this building once was a police station! Though the interior
frequently changes the main theme seems to be Carribean. Loud music and
videos - what else would you expect?Open daily 9am-1am. |
| The Bulldog Oudezijds Voorburgwal 132. (627 02 95) This is the place where it all started. A long and narrow bar in the
middle of the Red Light district, with the same Bulldog souvenirs and the
same soft drug menu, but in a less frenetic atmosphere. The Bulldog operates
two other coffeeshops on this street, at no 90 and no 218.Open daily 10am-1am. De
DampkringHandboogstraat 29 (638 07 05). A must visit, this winner of several Hightimes Cannabis Cups. Though winning this prestigous award attracts a fair share of visitors from abroad, the Dampkring is all in all still very much a coffeeshop for locals, with a friendly staff which will answer any questions you might have. Open daily 10am-1am. Dutch Flowers Singel 387 (624 76 24). A city center coffeeshop with a great view of the Singel canal. Lots of magazines, newspapers and comic books to read. On a warm summer's day the nice outdoor terrace makes for good people watching. Open daily 10am-11pm (1am weekends). Grasshopper Oudebrugsteeg 16 (626 12 59). Waterfront coffeeshop on the edge of the Red Light District. The first one you encounter walking into Amsterdam from Central Station, so it's packed with tourists. Does stand out from the surrounding shops though. The Grasshopper has opened a branch at Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 57.Open daily 8am-1am. |
